College Experiences
INShape
INShape was a great internship opportunity for me here at IUPUI. I had the privilege of getting to train one of the most hardworking and upbeat clients. This was a great learning experience for me as a personal trainer. Throughout my experience within this internship, I got to apply and develop my knowledge within personal training. This included writing out workouts that align with my clients goals and progressing them each week. It was an amazing experience getting to teach my clients the benefits of working out and watching his daily functionality increase. I also took a lot of pride in helping my client actually make a lot of progress towards his goals over the short nine weeks I got to train with him.
Ability Fitness Clinic
The Ability Fitness Clinic was another great learning experience for me. This clinic is centered around providing individualized exercise programs for young adults in the Indianapolis area with disabilities. It was similar to personal training, but I learned many different things visually and physically from my client as a trainer throughout this experience. I learned how to better myself as not only a personal trainer but as a person. I understood how to articulate my communication better as well as how to be more patient and come to things at a different perspective. It challenged my knowledge of demonstration and explanations when walking my client through workouts. My client was awesome and I had such a fun time training him. He was a very hard worker and was always full of energy. I learned a lot about him throughout our time training together, and it honed me into a more well-rounded individual and fitness trainer.
Volunteer Experience at Gleaner's Food Bank
I had the opportunity to get to volunteer and help at Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis. What really astonished me upon first glance, was the amount of food that Gleaner's provides to those in need. When I first walked into the warehouse and saw the rows of industrial sized shelves and forklifts moving pallets and pallets of food supplies around, I understood just how philanthropic this company was. While I was there, I helped move a lot of food around, categorize it, and assort it. I also helped them load specific orders into vans to be delivered to other warehouses or even those in need directly. It was a great opportunity and experience and showed me just how extensive the food crisis and malnourishment goes, not only in Indiana, but in the entire United States.
Volunteer Experience at Monumental Marathon
Monumental Marathon was another great thing to experience in Indy. I helped work this marathon for 2 days, in the morning until the evening, and it was nothing short of nonstop. Between loading and unloading U-Haul trucks full of tables, traffic cones, water jugs and water cups, there wasn't much time for breaks. We had to deliver all of these supplies to various stations on the marathon path to provide water, snacks, and energy to the runners. Once we finished with one stop, we were immediately on to the next, and as the last runner would pass previous stops, we raced to clean and load everything back up. It was a jam packed, but extremely interesting experience. I'll never forget how thankful, and exhausted, all the runners were as they would pass by; grabbing anything they could without stopping for long. I'll also never forget the hard work and effort that everyone puts in to make this event possible.
